Darlene Margaret Ann Miller found her way back to her husband, Gerald Miller, on the morning of September 14, 2024.
She was born on August 25th, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA and raised on Hope Street. After Darlene graduated from Kensington High School, she met a few handsome suitors but found herself most smitten with Gerald Miller. Being her funny self, she introduced herself not as Darlene Haydu, but as “Sicklinda Pick”...and the rest was history.
Darlene married Gerald on October 17 in 1970. During their marriage, they enjoyed weekend get-togethers with family and friends, renovating their home, then renovating it again, and then again for good measure. Darlene also enjoyed putting Gerald to work in the yard, when not putting him to work in house. She took special pride in growing her roses, lavender and hibiscus.
Darlene was strong willed and stubborn at times, but also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. She was generous, loyal, and brave. She was a whiz at math and full to the brim with knowledge on anything related to the Vietnam war.
Both Darlene and Gerald suffered cancer later in life, with Darlene beating breast cancer and then lung cancer, after Gerald’s passing. Most days Darlene could be found at home sitting at her dining room table plucking away on her laptop, never missing a chance to send Facebook birthday & anniversary wishes to family and friends, signing all her messages” Love, Aunt Dar.” When not stalking Facebook posts, she was doggedly trying to get to the next level on Candy Crush, with a cigarette in one hand and her cowboy shows on the TV… at full volume.
Everyone in her circle has a story or two about Darlene’s’ foul mouth or her impatience. But everyone also has a story or two about her big heart and generosity. Darlene will be most remembered for her love of family and friends, and her determination to live. When her time came, she carried herself with dignity, strength, and honor. While our hearts mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering. She will be missed.
Darlene is survived by her sisters-in-law Marie Rodgers (Miller), Veronica Forster (Miller) and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her father John Haydu, mother Anna Sweeney (Kovach), sisters Bonnie Bosak (Haydu) and Stephanie Haydu, brother Nicholas Haydu and her beloved husband Gerald Miller.
In honor of her final wishes, Darlene’s ashes will be comingled with her husband Gerald’s ashes and placed in an urn along with their wedding bands and other beloved mementos. The urn will be placed in a niche at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
The memorial service will begin promptly at 10:00 AM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery on September 27th, with a brunch following (TBD). Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to be seated and settled in time for the 10:00 – 10:30 service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Association for Cancer Research Ways to Give | Support Our Mission | AACR Foundation
