Edward J. Canning, Jr. of Bensalem passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was 72 years old. Ed was born in Philadelphia, growing up in Pennypack and Holmesburg, and raising his children in the Torresdale section of Northeast Phila. He resided in Bensalem for last 25 years. Ed graduated from Father Judge High School, Class of 1961, and Trenton State College, Class of 1972, earning his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts Education. For 30 years, Ed taught Industrial Arts at Council Rock High School North, during which time he earned two masters degrees. In recent years, Ed took Photography classes at Bucks County Comm. College. Ed was a proud member of the US Army, retiring as a Colonel in 2002 after 40 years of service; his final command was as the Assistant Commander of the National Ground Intelligence Center, Charlottesville, VA, a duty to which he was called following the tragic events of 9/11. Ed continued to serve his community in his retirement, working with Bensalem Police Department on Mayor DiGirolamo’s Emergency Management Committee. Ed was a proud member of the American Red Cross and was influential in the relief support following Hurricane Katrina. Ed also loved to sail, and was a dedicated member of the Delaware River Yacht Club. Above all, Ed’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Kathleen M. (nee Bartle). He is also survived by his loving children, Kathleen M. Stettner (Michael), Susan P. Held, Amy M. and Edward F. Canning; siblings John Canning (Marilyn), Raymond Canning (Anne), Thomas Canning (Debbie), and Moira Kelly (Daniel); grandchildren Laura, Cassandra, Megan, Ryan, Patrick, Alexa, Joseph, E.J., Jillian and Jacob, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and godchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation Thursday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, P.C., 2207 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, PA 19020, followed by a military service and interment at 2:00 PM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery. In tribute to Ed’s service, veterans and first responders are encouraged to dress in uniform or otherwise represent their own service.
