James Thomas Ryan, 74, of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on November 16, 2025. Born on February 27, 1951, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Robert and Delores (nee Murphy) Ryan, Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Jim served his country honorably as a Dog Handler and Drill Sergeant. Following his military career, he became a volunteer firefighter, embodying a spirit of bravery and selflessness that touched many lives. Jim’s vast experience in the trades, especially as an electrician, helped him reach the pinnacle of his professional career when he was appointed as Director of Bensalem Township Public Works, where he contributed to the community he cherished for over 25 years. During his time there, he transformed the Department into a model for surrounding municipalities to emulate and redefined what it meant to provide exceptional township operations and management.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Jacqueline, and his two sons, Michael Pienkowski (Marci) and Bryan Pienkowski (Melanie). He was also a deeply devoted grandfather to Matthew, Miranda, Brandon, and Austyn Pienkowski. Additionally, he leaves behind his dear sisters, Linda Boston (Harlow) and Kathy Kozemchak (Jeff), as well as brothers and sisters in law, and his many beloved nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Ryan Jr., and Debbie Regan (Mike).
Jim was best known for his playful spirit. He created treasured memories, such as indoor snowball fights, eating whipped cream from the can, and a bottomless candy drawer for the grandchildren. He found joy in fishing, RV-ing, and traveling the world with his love, Jackie, but most of all he cherished spending time with his family. He had a unique desire to help anyone in need at any moment. His laughter and kindness will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim’s viewing at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, 2207 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, PA 19020 on Thursday, November 20th, from 10:00-11:00 AM followed by a service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
In these moments of grief, may we find comfort in our shared stories and the love Jim imparted in each of our lives. He will forever remain in our hearts.
