John Joseph Tiers
January 14, 1939 – February 23, 2026
John Joseph Tiers, a devoted family man, proud Marine, and retired Inspector of the Philadelphia Police Department, passed away peacefully on February 23,2026 at Ann’s Choice in Warminster at the age of 87.
Born on January 14, 1939, John was the only son of the late John and Mary Agnes Tiers (née Sharp)
A Philadelphian through and through, he answered the call to service early, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1956 at the age of 17. He served honorably until 1959, including a formative tour stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
Upon returning home, John joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 1960, beginning a distinguished 32 year career. He rose through the ranks with integrity and grit, retiring as an Inspector in 1992. To John, "The City of Brotherly Love" wasn't just a nickname; it was a community he spent three decades protecting and a place he truly loved.
Outside of his uniform, John was a man of diverse passions. A self-taught bibliophile, he could often be found with a cigar in hand and a book in his lap. His library reflected his curiosity, spanning the gritty details of detective novels, the complexities of World War II, and the deep archives of sports history.
John’s loyalty to the Philadelphia Phillies was unwavering, through every winning season and every "rebuilding" year. He watched every single game of the 2025 season.
He was known for his loving spirit and a legendary sense of humor; his family will forever miss his quick-witted one-liners that could lighten any room and his ability to tell a story that felt like home.
John’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Ann ( née Thornborrow).
He was the proud father of John Jr of Louisville Colorado; Robert (Kathleen) of Warminster and Kathleen (John) of Hatfield and son in law Steve Metzler of North Wildwood NJ. He is now joyfully reunited with his daughter, Mary-Ellen, who preceded him in death in 2022.
He was a wonderful Pop Pop. His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren: Matthew( Cara), Shannon, Andrew, Allison, Jason (Devon) and Kevin, who will remember Pop Pop for his sharp mind, his stories, and his big heart. He also proudly became a first time great grandfather to Jack James Himes.
