Joseph Wayne Ponist

Joseph Wayne Ponist, a beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 81. He was born on October 14, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later made his home in Levittown, Pennsylvania, where he raised his family and created a lifetime of cherished memories. After high school Joseph developed a deep interest in the inner workings of electronics which led him to pursue a lengthy & life altering career in electrical engineering. Throughout his distinguished career, Joseph worked in multiple facets within the field of communications and even led the development of new transmitter technologies that revolutionized the industry.

The experience and expertise he held in this field allowed him the opportunity to travel the world supporting sites with the installation and repair of transmitters and towers across the globe.

The culmination of events in his life ultimately led him to a fulfilling career at Rutgers University where he dedicated 35 years of his life. His commitment, integrity, and creativity to his profession earned him respect and admiration from peers and students alike. As a father, Joseph leaves behind a legacy of love and support. He is survived by his sons, Joseph, Michael, and Robert Ponist, his daughters, Kristin Ponist and Michelle Urban and Son-In-Law Scott Urban. He also treasured his time with his grandchildren: DeAndre, Landon, Alyx, Kairah, Karson, Gavin, and Phineas. As well as the countless “sons” and “daughters” with whom he supported as a father figure in their lives as well.

Joseph is also survived by his loving sister, Karen Jacobs, his brother, Jeff Ponist, and sister-in-law, Maribel Ponist. He is also survived by his extended family; Raymond and Judith O’Brian, Martin O’Brian, Jonathan and Mary Ann Unger, and Andy and Jean Dobron with whom Joseph shared deep and meaningful connections and memories with.

His children would be remiss to make reference to Joseph’s four-legged family members who were deeply important to him; Muffin, Chi-Chi, and Bruno.

Joseph's family; direct, extended, and “adopted” were the center of his world, and his warmth, compassion, and cutting-humor will forever resonate in their hearts.

He cherished the bonds of family and friendship and was known for his unwavering support and kindness. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife Theresa, and his parents Kathleen and Joseph Ponist In addition to his professional and familial achievements, Joseph was an active member of the National Rifle Association, and his commitment to community and civic engagement illustrated his deep sense of responsibility and devotion to the values he held dear.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joseph's’s visitation at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, 2207 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, Pa 19020 on Friday, August 7th from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by his service at 6:00 PM. Interment will be private.
