Martin F. Nelson, born in Lexington Virginia to Mary (Mager) and George Nelson on October 7, 1933. Marty was a resident of Somerton, Pa. for 55 years, he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 9, 2023. He was almost 90 years old.
Martin was the beloved husband of the late Helen M. Nelson for 60 years and the loving father of Maryellen Ludascher, (the late Robert Ludascher); Martin J. Nelson (Cheryl); Katie Layman, (Garry); Patricia Nelson, John Savoca; Stephen Nelson, (Joan), and grandfather to Jennifer Brady, (Mike); Shannon Dogmanits, (Josh); Sean Ludascher; Katelyn Ludascher; Nicole Talarico, (Joe); Michael Nelson, (Devin); Christopher Nelson, (Allison); Alexandra Layman, Taylor Phillips, (Kyle) and Elizabeth Savoca. Marty is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.
Marty was a devoted parishioner of St. Christopher’s Church in Somerton where he contributed to the new church construction in 1979 and served as a eucharistic minister for several years. His greatest pleasure was raising his family, working on projects with his sons and coaching neighborhood sports teams. Visitors to his home could always count on his generous hospitality. He was a diligent and dependable employee of the Bell Telephone Company as an engineer for 37 years. He was past president of IRWA and concluded his career with Transcontinental Pipeline Co. He proudly served with his Eighth Infantry platoon in the US Army as an instructor at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He was an active participant in St. Christopher’s Seniors Club and enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Ireland, Italy, and many other destinations. He was a proud graduate of La Salle College and North Catholic High School in Philadelphia where he made lifelong friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his celebration of life Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 10 to 11 AM at St. Christopher’s Church 13301 Proctor Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19116, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Rite of Committal Resurrection Cemetery.
