Mary Kathryn Sherwood

Mary Kathryn Sherwood (née Shellenberger) of Bensalem, PA passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of ninety-one on March 25, 2025. She was born on November 29, 1933 in Danville, PA and lived there until she attended nursing school in Philadelphia. She loved working and was known affectionately in the Nottingham neighborhood as “Mary the Nurse.”

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Percival and Dorothy (Lyons) Shellenberger; her first husband, Edward Dearden; her husband, Marvin Sherwood; and her brother, Robert Shellenberger. She is survived by her two sisters, Helen Snyder and June Mainzer (Joe); her son, Edward Sherwood (Jacqui); her daughter-in-law, Carol Finnegan; and her grandchildren, Kathryn Sherwood (Richie) and Andrew Sherwood (Katrina). She will also be missed by extended family members and friends.

Mary was, first and foremost, a woman of faith, and she loved and trusted in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish and Our Lady of Fatima Church. She served as a Eucharistic minister and belonged to the Legion of Mary for many years. She enjoyed spending time with the Senior Citizens group, where she made some very dear friends. She and her friends often dined together at Bob Evans, although Mary loved cooking and made delicious mashed potatoes and stuffing of her own.

Mary was a country girl at heart, but she often said that God gave each place a beauty of its own. She enjoyed traveling and spent her younger days traveling with her husband in the Army. She and Marvin also took many trips to Florida and Hawaii. At home, Mary had a knack for gardening and kept a rose bush that changed colors and bloomed even in the winter. In her later years, Mary was happiest sitting on the porch at the mountains and spending time with her loved ones, especially her son Eddie.

Mary’s family and friends are invited to remember her together on Monday, March 31, 2025. A viewing will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church from 9:30-10:30 AM and followed by Mass. Mary will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery on Hulmeville Road.
